Exploring the Rare Bird Species and Green Canopy of Sundarban Reserve

With over 300 species of birds recorded, the Sundarbans is a birdwatcher paradise. From the masked finfoot to the collared kingfisher, every creek turn reveals a new wonder.

The Sundarbans is one of Asia premier birdwatching destinations. More than 300 bird species have been recorded here, including several globally threatened species that attract ornithologists from around the world.

Key Species to Look For

The Masked Finfoot is perhaps the most sought-after bird in the Sundarbans — a shy, elusive species that inhabits densely vegetated waterways. The Mangrove Pitta, with its vivid green and blue plumage, is another prized sighting. Kingfishers of multiple species — Common, Collared, and Brown-winged — dart along the creek edges throughout the day.

The Migratory Season

Between October and March, hundreds of migratory species arrive from Central Asia, Siberia, and northern India. Waders, ducks, terns, and raptors transform the tidal mudflats into vibrant gathering grounds.

Birdwatching by Boat

The most rewarding way to birdwatch in the Sundarbans is from a slow-moving boat, approaching quietly and allowing birds to behave naturally. Our naturalist guides carry high-quality binoculars and spotting scopes, and are trained to identify species by call as well as sight.

Photography Tips

The soft golden light of early morning over the Sundarbans waterways provides extraordinary photography conditions. Wide angle lenses capture the atmospheric mangrove reflections while telephoto lenses allow intimate portraits of perched kingfishers and herons.
